Visit to the Distillery
The Medronheiro is a tree that grows mainly in the mountains and produces the medronho, a fruit that, after fermented, results in a typical firewater of the region of Algarve - the aguardente de medronho.
Everything indicates that this firewater began to be produced for medicinal purposes by the Arabs in Monchique around the 10th century. Production is still nowadays handmade using slow fire and copper stills with their fine serpentine tubes.
Come to know more about the production process of the medronho spirit and visit a traditional distillery, where you can watch the process of distilling and tasting this “nectar of the gods”, icon of the traditional Algarve flavors. You can also participate in the process of harvesting and starting fruit fermentation between October and December.
